Scott Delgadillo Scholarship

Scott Delgadillo Scholarship

It was Scott's dream to attend the University of Notre Dame. Because education was so important to Scott, in his memory the Friends of Scott Foundation, Friends to Children with Cancer, offers college scholarship opportunities to cancer patients or survivors.

The 2009 scholarship search was inspiring and moving. We received more than 65 applications that were carefully reviewed by a dedicated group of volunteers. While so many of the applicants deserved awards, three individuals were truly exemplary, and will receive $1,000 scholarships. We are proud to award 2009 Friends of Scott College Scholarships to the following outstanding young people:

Matthew Vosejpka

Matthew Vosejpka Matthew Vosejpka is headed to the University of Minnesota to pursue a degree in Nursing. Matthew underwent a bone marrow transplant for high-risk acute lymphoblastic leukemia. He is involved in an organization called Hope Kids, which helps other sick kids by providing support and hope. His application essay stated, "I want to help other sick people battle their illnesses...and play as much a role in helping others as the people who took care of me did when I was sick."

Nadia Torkzadeh

Nadia Torkzadeh Our second recipient, Nadia Torkzadeh, started her own non-profit organization called CANcer Kids CAN help! After her battle with leukemia, she wanted to reach out to newly diagnosed children by giving them special gifts with encouraging notes attached. Nadia plans to major in Art with a minor in Psychology at the University of Kansas. She wants to become an art therapist to facilitate the emotional healing of people who have experienced illness or trauma.

Pedro Guardado III

Pedro Guardado III

Finally, we celebrate one of our own as Pedro Guardado III heads to San Diego State University! While undergoing treatment for T-cell leukemia at Rady Children's Hospital, Pedro will study business administration and civil engineering. In his essay, Pedro shared, "The mental strength that I have gained from this experience cannot be explained into words; ever since the first day of treatment I have kept a positive outlook...I plan to go to college with the same attitude...get an education, and be someone in life."
